One Night Only with David Johansen

back to list

“I just wanted to bring those walls down and have a party,” says musical iconoclast David Johansen about his 2019 gig at New York institution Café Carlyle. Footage of the luminous set is among many wonderfully intimate moments captured in Personality Crisis: One Night Only, a documentary from Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi about the life of the one-of-a-kind performer.

The film is split between the performance at the Carlyle, archival footage, and heartfelt interviews shot during the pandemic by Johansen and Leah Hennessey, the daughter of David’s wife and collaborator Mara Hennessey.

The film is a testament to a lost New York and a performer who remains as fresh and exciting as ever. Much of the work seen in the documentary was conceived during David’s residency at The Roxy Hotel so it makes complete sense that The Roxy Hotel welcomes home its favorite doll for an exclusive theatrical run of the documentary at Roxy Cinema.

On Sunday April 23rd at 7:45 PM, Roxy Cinema will be showing the film free to the public. Seats are first come, first served.
