Rahill Jamalifard's Record Store Day Wish List

back to list

Vinyl debuts, underground classics and more: the frontwoman of New York five-piece Habibi shares the record releases she’s looking forward to.

If you’ve heard the music Rahill Jamalifard creates with her band Habibi—a NY-based five-piece—you’ll know that her taste in music traverses genres from soul to Motown to disco to funk and beyond, which is right up our alley here at GrandLife. So, with Record Store Day’s second annual event taking place on Black Friday, we stole a moment with Rahill to get her hit list of record releases that will be available at Academy Records this coming Friday, November 29.

Alice Clark by Alice Clark

A beautiful record impressively recorded live in two days. Clark sings with so much emotion, you can feel her pain and longing, so full of soul with jazz undertones. A true gem.

Music of Many Colors by Fela Kuti and Roy Ayers

The first pressing of this album since the ’80s recorded after three weeks of touring in Nigeria together (Ayers opening for Fela)—two absolute legends merging Afrobeat with jazz-funk.

“Space Princess” 12-inch by Lonnie Liston Smith

A classic that became a standard at Paradise Garage and Loft—you can’t go wrong with Lonnie’s cosmic jazz-funk dialing into a disco beat.

“Abu Ali” 12-inch by Ziad Rahbani

This is the first-ever reissue of Lebanese producer, musician and political activist Rahbani’s Abu Ali. A mystical disco track recorded with a full orchestra in Greece; very late ’70s, Beirut-meets-New York dance floor scene. A must!

The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967 7” Box Set, Aretha Franklin

Franklin remains peerless and the queen of soul.  The singles are among some of her greatest commercial hits with her uncompromising soulful voice. This box set should be a staple in any collection of 45s.
